Abstract

Lichens are fascinating organisms that support a wide variety of life. A lichen is a composite organism consisting of a fungus and a photosynthetic partner, usually green algae or cyanobacteria. The fungus provides the structure and protection, while the photosynthetic partner provides the energy. Lichens function to absorb moisture and nutrients from the air and act as vital regulators of the water cycle. Lichens play a crucial role in providing habitats and food sources for various organisms, including insects, birds, and even reindeer in the Arctic. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
