Abstract

Jejunal atresia is a common type of intestinal atresia that requires surgical correction soon after birth. Surgical options include end-to-end anastomosis, plication or tapering enteroplasty with anastomosis, Santulli procedure, and side-to-side anastomosis. We present a case of a 1-day-old girl presented with epigastric distention, bilious residue in the orogastric tube, and failure to pass meconium in first 24 hours. Babygram suggested a jejunal atresia. During laparotomy a Type I jejunal atresia was found with a caliber ratio of 1:5. A shunting side-to-side jejuno-jejunostomy was done and small bowel continuity was established. The baby started to tolerate oral feeds and passed stools normally on 6th day and later discharged on the 14th day. One week follow up at the outpatient unit showed a good outcome. In conclusion, side-to-side anastomosis can be the procedure of choice for jejunal atresia cases with severe caliber discrepancy.
