The Efficacy of Probiotics on Gingival Inflammation Following Adult Fixed Orthodontic Treatment

Fixed orthodontic treatment increases the incidence of tooth tooth decay, periodontal disease, and candidiasis. Braces, bands, and arch wires impede oral hygiene and raise dental plaque. Thus, fixed orthodontic patients are more likely to develop oral diseases. Consequently, orthodontic patients need oral care beyond mechanical oral hygiene. Probiotics, "living micro-organisms," may encourage healthy bacterial development. Probiotics in sufficient amounts can help health. They first fight dysbiosis by blocking the major periodontal pathogenic bacteria, which lowers oral microbiota immunogenicity and changes the inflammatory and immunological response to reduce inflammation. A 15-year-old female patient reported using fixed appliance orthodontics with periodontal disease, Class I, bidental proclination, a 7.32 mm overjet, a 3.12 mm overbite, and crowding. Following the extraction of the maxilla and mandible's first four premolars, an Edgewise prescription with a 0.022" slot was used. After the brackets were positioned, the multiloop was aligned and leveled. The patient often developed severe gingivitis during the two years of treatment. After scaling and root planning procedures, we gave the patient probiotic supplements at the 25 months of orthodontic treatment. For a month, the patient took probiotics twice a day. Collaboration between orthodontists and periodontists was crucial in this context. The results indicated a reduction in gingivitis. Recurrent gingivitis is not verified within the subsequent three months. The patient conveyed significant satisfaction with the outcomes, as the gingival tissues were healthy and exhibited a typical contour. © 2025 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
