Abstract

Proverbs that use metaphor are closely related to the social and cultural life of a society, often drawing from animals and plants. This reflection the characteristics and identity of a society, with the purpose of delivering messages in a way that can be easily understood by the audience. This study examines the metaphor of “dog” in Egyptian proverbs, using a semantic cognitive and conceptual metaphor approach. The points discussed in this research are the forms of the dog metaphor and the representation of the use of the dog metaphor in Egyptian Arabic proverbs. The research method use is descriptive qualitative, with data collection using the SBLC method. The data analysis method employed is the referential matching method. This study found that 11 proverbs were found that use the word “dog” as a metaphor. The conceptualization of the dog metaphor is dominated by the state of the dog. This is based on the relationship between human and dogs, which serves as an analogy for human characteristic or condition. The use of the word “dog”as a metaphor in these proverbs represents human characteristic, such as good and bad people, someone who talks excessively, the lost people, and also represents communities (civil and government) and individual traits.
