Abstract

This study examines Arabic calligraphy in mosques in the Prambanan District, Klaten Regency based on graphemic studies, moral messages, and sociolinguistics. This research is interesting to do because Arabic calligraphy writing in mosques has a function to convey a moral message to people who read it. In addition, the types of Arabic calligraphy that exist in mosques in the Prambanan sub-district are also written in various calligraphic styles. The method used in this research is the method of providing data, the method of data analysis, and the method of presenting the results of data analysis. Based on an analysis of the types of Arabic calligraphy in mosques in the Prambanan sub-district, it was concluded that the types of Arabic calligraphy used were (a) Kūfī, (b) Naskhi, (c) Dīwānī, and (d) ṡuluśī. The sociolinguistic functions of Arabic calligraphy in mosques are (a) social interaction, (b) control of reality, (c) recording of facts, (d) instruments of thought, and (e) expression of identity. In addition, the moral message in Arabic calligraphy in mosques in the Prambanan sub-district is faith, piety, patience, and determination.
