This chapter discusses the new developments in diagnosis and treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). NPC is strongly related to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), especially in the high endemic regions of Asia. Therefore EBV is a major topic of interest in improving early diagnosis, follow-up, and development of new treatment opportunities. The emergence of new imaging modalities, organ preservation protocols, and well-equipped centers of expertise around the globe have in part enhanced the treatment of NPC patients. Extensive research continues to evolve to treat patients with relapsing local, regional, or metastasized disease. In addition to advanced surgery and radiation techniques, photodynamic therapy and immunotherapy are being explored to give patients with NPC a better prognosis and survival. This chapter will discuss the aforementioned issues in depth and focus on specific updates in the diagnosis, follow-up as well as treatment strategies of NPC. © 2022 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
