Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxins play an important role in the incidence of food poisoning and various infections in animals and humans. The present study proposed investigating the occurrence of newer enterotoxin genes among S. aureus isolates from milk samples obtained from different farms in Yogyakarta Indonesia by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). A total of 75 S. aureus were isolated from milk samples of bovine (46 isolates) and Peranakan Etawa (PE) goats (29 isolates) from different farms in Yogyakarta Indonesia. All isolates were identified based on cultural and biochemical properties and the 23S rRNA�s amplification specific to S. aureus. The PCR assay was carried out to determine the eight new enterotoxin (sek, sel, sem, sen,seo, sep, seq, ser) genes prevalence among these isolates. Molecular analysis revealed that 10 of 46 bovine isolates (21.74) and 8 of 29 goat isolates (27.59) harbored the sek genes, followed by seq (19.56), sem (13.4), seo (10.87), sep and ser (6.52), and sen (4,35) of bovine isolates, and sel, sen, sep (3.45) of goat isolates. The recent identification of new staphylococcal enterotoxins in the milk (ready to eat food) indicates a potential risk for consumers� health. © 2021 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
