Abstract

Winongo river that flows in Yogyakarta Municipality has high potential since it passes 2 high densety populated districts. The water pollution status in this river is estimated increasing compare to five years ago, although the Act No. 4, 1982, some instructions and PERDA (Regional Law) have been carried out improve river water environment. to

This research is designated to evaluate water pollution status of Winongo River related with community behaviour and to decide how to solve the problems both for the official and for other scentists.

There were 34 river water samples taken in the morning and afternoon from 4 research locations for chemical analysis and well water from the same research 12 location for bacteriology analysis. There were 312 respondents in 4 research locations that have been interviewed and several staffs that conduct organized activities (industry, market, craft, home industry) information abouth their activities in relation with water several to collect pollution Discriptive analysis result and status. significancy test by four fold tables show the positive relation between water pollution status of Winongo River and population, density, behaviour/household activities in the morning and in the afternoon and the sourounding industrial activities. Besides Winongo River water shows the decrease of quality compare to five years ago.

It is concluded that the community behaviour is more domi- nant in causing pollution compare to government efforts that have been done. However socio-economic condition plays an important role in improving water environment efforts of Winongo River.
