Measuring comparative advantage and market share of Indonesian chicken products

Since the outbreak of Avian Influenza was detected in Indonesia and other countries in 2003, the trade of poultry products and their derivatives has been significantly impacted. This study aims to measure and analyze the comparative advantage of chicken products in Indonesia. Secondary data from Indonesian Central Statistics Agency, Indonesian Ministry of Trade, and United Nations Comtrade from 2014-2023 were used to calculating through Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Market Share Index (MSI). The results showed that Indonesian Chicken Product (ICP) exports from 2014-2023 reached USD 20,582,922.80, with a peak in 2023. Additionally, the highest ICP export was under HS code 040711, with Myanmar as the primary destination, totaling USD 10,280,646.70. RCA analysis that ICP under HS codes 010511, 010594, and 040711 had values >1, while others had values <1. Moreover, the highest MSI for ICP was found under HS code 010511 in Timor Leste. Thus, ICP has a comparative advantage in the international market. Improvement of value chain efficiency is needed to increase competitiveness in the international market, thereby ensuring the sustainability of Indonesia's poultry industry. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing.
