Abstract

DNA barcoding using 16S rRNA for molecular characterization is a taxonomic method that uses a short genetic marker in an insect DNA to identify a species, including an unknown species. This study contributes to increasing the number of published accounts of DNA barcoding and accurately distinguishing the stingless bees in Kalimantan, Indonesia. The mt 16S rRNA region of all the samples was amplified and the nucleotide sequences were determined and analyzed. This study reveals that specimens collected in Kalimantan belong to six genera Tetragonula (7 species), Geniotrigona (1 species), Heterotrigona (1 species), Homotrigona (2 species), Lepidotrigona (1 species), and Wallacetrigona (1 species). © 2026, The Entomological Society of India.
