Abstract

An occurrence of gas burst was found in Banten section of Java toll road project area. This phenomenon was predicted could cause an effect of road embankment in the future. In order to reduce this effect, a series of field investigation were conducted to obtain the solution to solve this problem. A geo-electricity and seismic refraction surveys were applied to describe the soil layer stratigraphy. The gas composition which sprays out in the surface was revealed by LEMIGAS test. The soil layers stratigraphy results describe it was found a continuous vertical cavity from bottom of soil layer to soil surface. The cavity was identified as sandy and partly a water-bearing layer. The solution of embankment reinforcement from the gas burst applied lining system in order to release the gas and water in soil surface. The recommendation of lining system has three big steps which are 1. The nonwoven geotextile (class 3 with elongation> 50) was installed as a separation between the original soil layer and gas flow material, 2. Blinding stone material with a diameter of >5 - 35 cm layered above the geotextile (layer thickness 50 cm), 3. The geo-membrane work (1 mm thick) was spread over blinding stone material as wide as the road so that the gas does not rise to the embankment material. © 2024 AIP Publishing LLC.
