Abstract

Indonesia, based on data from the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (2021), is one of the countries with the most animal cruelty content uploaded on social media. This situation could be a cause of threats to animal welfare.
This study was conducted to analyze animal exploitation using the Critical Animal Studies (CAS) perspective, with
two study themes and one strategy design that was explored: First, the theme of animal exploitation based on historical periodization in Indonesia; second, identification and analysis of animal exploitation in the present day through social media, and third is the strategy proposed to overcome the problem. This study uses a combination method (mix method), namely collecting and analyzing data qualitatively and quantitatively. The results of the study indicate that animal exploitation activities in Indonesia have occurred in the past, which can be seen from archaeological remains and existing historical records. Nowadays, animal exploitation is still done and even in the form of animal torture for content on social media. One strategy to prevent animal exploitation on social media is public awareness not to watch, not follow, not like, comment, subscribe, and share animal exploitation content on social media.
