Abstract

Hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is a high level of triglycerides in the blood and may be affected in liver function. The liver is a vital organ that have complex functions such as bile secretion, bilirubin metabolism, detoxification, a store of vitamins and minerals. Arthrospira maxima and Chlorella vulgaris are the natural ingredients that are widely cultivated and have beneficial nutrients such as high of amino acids, minerals, vitamins, fiber and bioactive compounds that can be a hepatoprotective agent. The aimed of this research was to determine and study the effect of Arthrospira maxima and Chlorella vulgaris as a preventive treatment on the liver function of HTG rats (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout, 1769). Twenty female Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups randomly. The groups were control, HTG, gemfibrozil (10mg/kg.bw.), A.maxima (2500mg/kg.bw.), and C.vulgaris (2500mg/kg.bw.). The groups except control were induction in preventive treatment by waste cooking oil (jelantah) containing saturated fat (15 ml/kg.bw.) for 40 days. The TG (triglyceride), ALT, bilirubin levels were measured by spectrophotometric methods and liver histology was analyzed qualitatively. The liversomatic index was measured by analytical balance. The data was statistically analyzed using One Way ANOVA followed by DMRT. The TG level of HTG group was significantly increased (p<0.05). ALT and bilirubin levels of A.maxima and C.vulgaris group were significantly lower than HTG group (p<0.05). The liversomatic index of HTG group was significantly higher than other groups (p<0.05). Observed hepatocyte damage is swelling, pycnosis, karyorrhexis, and karyolysis. This research concluded that the A.maxima and C.vulgaris able to maintain increasing of TG, ALT, bilirubin level, and liversomatic index. A.maxima and C.vulgaris able to maintain liver damage in the normal condition. © 2020 Elsevier B.V., All rights reserved.
