Abstract

Previous research have studied the various risk factors that can lead to video game addiction. One environmental factor that contributes to the development of addiction is video game design. Based on this fact, we argue that the design aspects can also be potentially used to minimize the compulsive effect of video games. This effort may be done by conducting a study to develop principles, guidelines, or models that can be used by designers to design less addictive-video games. The selection of proper methodology and methods to perform the research is significant to do. This present study aims to select the proper methods for the next research on developing a reference model for designing addiction-aware video games. The results show four phases of the proposed research and the selected methods for each phase with its justifications. Some HCI methods selected include observation, survey, diary study, interview, focus group, and experiment.
