Abstract
The existence energy storage system (ESS) can reduce some of the problems in the power system. The problems occur in dispatch, stability, and economical at generation and transmission. ESS is one of a solution to overcome issues about intermittency, load shifting, frequency regulation, energy arbitrage, reserve power support, etc. Impact of size and location of ESS give a significant benefit to the power system. The objective of this paper is to investigate proper sizing and placement of ESS considering the transmission losses. The condition of transmission losses can influence power scheduling on Unit commitment (UC) and reliability system. Thus, an important technique for considering certain ESS is needed. The optimization of the ESS operation is solved using mix integer quadratic programming (MIQP). The result of the optimization is used as input for UC to optimize cost for scheduling generations. The next step is using the UC output to perform power flow analysis for evaluating transmission losses. The total operational cost 24 hours without ESS up to 136.23, ESS installed 100 MWh up to 135.47, ESS installed 60 MWh up to 135.7, and ESS installed 40 MWh up to 135.74. While the result of total losses without ESS reaches 217.636 MW and ESS installed reaches 212.187 MW at bus 6. If ESS installed at bus 19, the losses increase to 220.729 MW. Therefore, the difference in ESS capacity has an impact on system operation, while the placement of ESS yields different losses. The next step of developed optimization needs to be determined ESS of proper location and sizing capacity as part of systems using the best methods metaheuristic to complete the best results.
