Abstract

This research aims to find reasons for self-medication and understand students' awareness about drugs, particularly vitamins self-medication Self-medication nowadays very common in the world, especially in Indonesia high number of people use vitamins and other dietary supplements. The research site was Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta to determine which vitamins are used mostly and why people used these supplements. The survey was conducted by a distribution of checklist questions that contained different aspects of self-medication among 86 students, both male and female, from various chemistry programs. Three experts validated checklist questions content, and the pilot study checked the reliability of the checklist questions. Descriptive analysis was used using SPSS for data analysis to check the frequency and percentage of students who used vitamins and results show that most students used multivitamins with the percentage of 55.95%, secondly vitamin C 19.04%. According to a survey, most students used vitamins for good health with a ratio of 39.88%, energy 20.23%, poor diet 11.30%, and a smaller number of people use for gaining weight 1.19%. Several people used vitamins every day, some use once a week, and the highest percentage of people showed they use vitamins when they feel unwell. This research concludes that mainly used vitamins, multivitamins, and vitamin C, and university students found they use it just for good health and energy gain. This study was limited; further research can be held with different aspects and on a vast level for better results
