Abstract
Apheresis procedures rely on citrate anticoagulation, which can significantly disrupt calcium and magnesium homeostasis. This review outlines the physiological roles and regulation of these essential minerals and explores how citrate-induced binding during apheresis may lead to hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia. It also summarizes current understanding of the clinical impact and management strategies for maintaining electrolyte balance in patients undergoing apheresis. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd
