Abstract

Vernonia amygdalina Delile. (Asteraceae) is used in traditional medicine to treat various diseases and some research provides its activity to treat infections and breast cancer. The aim of this study was to determine cytotoxic activity of Vernonia amygdalina Delile. Leaves extract and fractions. Extract was prepared using ethanol absolute with reflux method. Extract was fractionated with n-hexane and ethylacetate. Cytotoxic activity was determined with MTT method towards WiDr and MCF-7 cell lines. The results of MTT assay showed that ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethylacetate fraction and water fraction IC50 value towards WiDr and MCF-7 cell lines were (90.51 ± 0.57; 293.73 ± 2.10; 25.38 ± 0.16 and 968.93 ± 39.40 µg/mL) and (217.90 ± 2.25; 423.94 ± 6.04; 25.14 ± 0.13 and 968.72 ± 18.05 µg/mL) respectively. The results reveal that ethylacetae fraction of Vernonia amygdalina Delile. Leaves is the strongest cytotoxic activity towards WiDr and MCF-7 cell lines. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
