Abstract

BACKGROUND: Wound healing in the gastrointestinal tract, especially in cases of anorectal trauma in children, remains controversial, and there is no satisfactory treatment. As an alternative surgical option, the use of stromal vascular fraction and platelet-rich plasma has recently gained popularity. This study determined the effects of the combination of platelet -rich plasma and stromal vascular fraction on epithelialization and collagenization of anal trauma in Wistar rats. METHODS: This study was conducted in 40 Wistar rats at the Laboratory of Anatomical Pathology of Hasanuddin Uni-versity, Faculty of Medicine. The rats were split into treatment and placebo groups, with each observed for 14 days, and the outcomes were evaluated based on the histological characteristics. The statistical analysis results were displayed in tables with narrative explanations. RESULTS: On day 1, epithelialization was not seen in both groups. Epithelialization began in the treatment (platelet-rich plasma plus stromal vascular fraction) group on day 7. Complete epithelialization was noted in the placebo group on day 14 and the treatment group on day 21. Thick collagen began to appear in the placebo group on day 21. In the treatment group, collagenization was noted on day 7 and peaked on day 21. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of epithelialization and collagenization can be increased with the combination of platelet -rich plasma and stromal vascular fraction.
