In this work, transient thermal tensioning (TTT) treatments were applied to friction stir welding of AA5083-H116 plates at various secondary heating temperatures of 100, 200 and 300 °C with the primary aim of gaining better fatigue crack growth performance. Fatigue crack growth tests were conducted with a constant amplitude load on centre crack tension (CCT) and single edge cracked tension (SECT) specimens. Results show that TTT treatments modify the distribution of residual stresses and cause microstructural changes. These two factors strongly influence fatigue performance of the weld joints and mechanisms of the fatigue crack growth are discussed in this investigation.
